Happy hair for the winter season
Winter is a great time to snuggle up with a book and hot chocolate or indulge in a Sunday roast and a glass of red wine. However when you step outside in the Winter cold, dry air can put extra stress on our hair leaving it drier, more brittle and prone to breakages. Here are our top tips for hydrating and nourishing your hair this season.
1. Stay hydrated and eat well
Drink plenty of water. The NZ ministry of health recommends 8-10 cups a day. Hair needs moisture and vitamins to stay in optimal health. If you're dehydrated, your body will direct much-needed moisture to critical body functions and your hair growth will diminish, hair shafts will become brittle and split ends can easily develop.
We recommend to increase your intake of vitamin C, citrus fruits and dark leafy greens to up the antioxidants to help protect from hair breakages and prevent split ends for happy healthy hair.
Also try adding salmon, avocado, nuts, or sardines to your diet for hair shine and growth as the body cannot produce the fatty acids on its own.
2. Protect your hair and scalp from the elements
If you are going out to battle the elements, wear a beanie or something to protect your scalp from cold dry air and harsh weather.
If you like hot showers in winter, protect your hair and scalp with a shower cap to ensure you don't strip moisture from your skin and oils from your scalp.
3. Stay away from heat styling
Exposing your hair to high heat can weaken your hair structure by losing strand elasticity which makes hair more prone to breakage. We recommend using a microfibre towel to soak up excess water post hair wash. Not only will microfibre towels cut your drying time down in half but they allow moisture retention to prevent your hair from dehydrating. Air drying your hair naturally is best.
4. Nourish your hair
Give your hair some TLC this winter season. Don’t skimp on the conditioner, and co wash (wash hair with just conditioner) as frequently as required to keep your hair nourished and moisturised from dryness. We recommend a deep condition treatment once a week which you can make at home with your Lusid Conditioner Bar and Lusid Smoothing Serum.
Just slice off a small piece of the bar, add water and melt and mix to a desired consistency. Then add a drop or two of Lusid Smoothing Serum for an easy homemade Lusid Deep Conditioning Treatment. For that extra self care we recommend investing in a pamper cap. We love to support local businesses and your hair will not regret it either. It’s the perfect combo for self care at home this winter.
